Introduction

When you assign a part number to a component, much more than simply the part number is assigned to component.
All the information pertinent to that catalogue part is assign to the component, which may include the manufacturer, image, description, pin numbers, layout views, etc.
By assigning catalogue parts to components, you will benefit from many of SkyCAD’s automated processes, such as automatically generated parts-lists and bills of material,
proper pin numbers associated to the appropriate symbol’s connection point, previewing an image of the component when it’s selected, properly dimensioned 2D layout views with clearance distances, direct access to the part’s online spec sheets, and many other features covered in other SkyCAD tutorials.

Instructions

There are several methods to assign catalogue parts to components:

  1. Select symbol(s) on a sheet

  2. Select component(s) in the tree view, parts list or BOM

  3. Set default part number for a symbol so when inserted the component is automatically assigned with that catalogue part

All these methods require the catalogue part to already be saved to your catalogue.
If the part is not yet saved, see if it’s available from the Online Parts Catalogue.
If the online parts catalogue doesn’t have the part, you can easily create it yourself following the Creating/modifying catalogue parts (for basic components) or Block generator (for more complex components; e.g. with I/O) tutorials.

1. Select symbol(s) on a sheet

  1. Select the symbol(s) on the sheet, go to the Home tab and select Assign from Catalogue

  2. Choose the part you want and click OK

2. Select component(s) in the tree view, parts list or BOM

  1. Select the project in the tree view, go to the Home tab and select Components, Parts List or BOM

  2. Select the component(s), go to the Home tab and select Assign from Catalogue

3. Set default part number for a symbol so when inserted the component is automatically assigned with that catalogue part

  1. Right-click on a symbol in the symbol library and choose Open Block

  2. Explore the properties of the symbol in the tree view

  3. In the Default part number property enter the part number of the desired catalogue part exactly how it appears in the catalogue

  4. Right-click on the symbol in the tree view and choose Save As, suffixing the file name with the part number

The default keyboard shortcut for Assign from Catalogue is F5.
