If you do panel layout before schematics

Description

If one of the first things you do when you start designing a new project is to design the panel layout, then this tutorial is for you.
This tutorial shows how to add catalogue parts directly to your panel layout.

Topics covered

Panel layout, layout view, component layout view, add parts, add components

Main content

If one of the first things you do when you start designing a new project is to add components to the project and design the panel layout, then here is an efficient way to get you started:

  1. Create a project
  2. Add a location to the project via the Create/Add tab
  3. Assign a part number, including layout(s), to the location
  4. Open the panel layout for the project
  5. Go to the Layout Tools tab and insert rails and wire ducts if required
  6. Under the Layout Tools tab, select Add part from catalogue
  7. Choose the class of component you wish to add (for terminals, see below) and click OK
  8. Choose the catalogue part you wish to add and click OK.
If you don't find the catalogue part you're looking for, try find it on the online catalogue or add it to your catalogue yourself using the standard tools (for basic components) or the block generator (for more complex components)
  9. Insert the layout of the part. (The part will also automatically be assigned to the location, added to the project, parts list and BOM.)
Tip: You can copy/paste the component's layout multiple times if you wish.

If you would like to insert terminals on the panel layout, please follow these steps:

  1. Select the location/project in the tree view, go to the Create/Add tab and select New/Add Terminal Strip
  2. Select the terminal strip in the tree view, go to the Create/Add tab and add the elements you want
  3. Assign part numbers to the elements
  4. Open the panel layout
  5. Go to the Layout Tools tab, select Layout Element, select the terminal strip and click OK to insert the entire terminal strip onto the panel layout

Once your layout is complete, you can insert it onto a sheet and give the printed copy to your workshop to get started with. In the meantime, you can start with the schematic design. Here are two methods to link the symbols on the schematics with the components on the panel layout:

Method 1 (while inserting a symbol onto the schematics):

  1. Hold the SHIFT key when inserting a symbol onto the schematics. A dialog box will display
  2. Select the component you wish this symbol to be linked to, then click OK
  3. To verify they have been linked, you can use the Navigate feature

Method 2 (after inserting a symbol onto the schematics):

  1. Right-click on the symbol, then select Link With whilst holding the SHIFT key. A dialog box will display
  2. Select the component you wish this symbol to be linked to, then click OK
  3. To verify they have been linked, you can use the Navigate feature
